Technique: opalines
Lattimo is an opaque white glass, invented in Murano around the middle of the 15th century in order to imitate the first porcelains that were very fashionable in Europe. It is obtained by ‘overlaying’ lattimo glass with one or more thin transparent and coloured glasses, resulting in splendid objects with intense and bright colours. Superimposition dates back to the historical glassmaking techniques of Murano. This marvellous art requires the skill and professionalism of the glassblower; it is an ancient craft whose secrets are handed down from father to son.
The Labuan collection is reminiscent of ancient oriental porcelain vases in the shape of its design. Labuan is, first, the Malaysian island mentioned in Emilio Salgari’s novels, then, the splendid vase created by the Venetian company.
