LAILA CAMEL
Camels are considered a symbol of endurance, serenity and calm. Hardly any other animal is so resilient and enduring in extremely harsh living conditions. Laila is a special tribute to these special creatures. Like all animals designed by Tom, she wears a fantastic costume full of exotic and playful ornaments that shimmer in the colours of the rainbow. With her decorative plumage made of real ostrich feathers, she is decorated as if for a carnival parade. What a wonderful world!
This article is handmade and hand-painted, so variations in colour, design, tone, small imperfections in glue or colour and irregularities are a specific feature of the product and testify to its craftsmanship.
All drag animals are decorated with imaginative costumes and exotic ornaments as if they were at a carnival parade. All are in the colours of the rainbow, emulating the cheerful mood of one of Tom’s favourite songs, Louis Armstrong’s ‘What a Wonderful World’.
Each Tom’s Drag item starts with a few quick sketches that the artist draws and quickly transforms into a detailed image. At this point, a rough figure is hand-carved from the wood with dimensions and proportions that reflect those that the final object will have. It is hand-painted by the artist and the prototype is created from which the rubber form will be carved. This caoutchouc form is the key to all of Tom’s Drag’s works, as liquid marmorino, a mixture of ground marble and synthetic resin, will be poured into it and then solidified. The piece, initially an opaque white colour, is then painted white and then polished. At this point, the edges of the colour fields are drawn in pencil to serve the artist as a reference for painting the object. The work concludes with the application of a resin that makes the colours resistant.
